Columbia, MD - March 11, 2010 - The Columbia Foundation is featuring “From A Global Window: The Caribbean,” an exhibit of 12 unique photographs and handmade paper by Columbia artist Denee Barr in their offices at 10227 Wincopin Circle, Suite G15 in Columbia, Maryland. The exhibit is open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday through May 28, and there will be a reception with the artist in the gallery on May 21st from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. . Ms. Barr will donate 25% of the sales proceeds from this exhibit to a Haiti Relief Fund. An accomplished singer and winner of the 1979 Howard University’s International Vocal Solo Competition, Ms. Barr will sing songs from the Caribbean at the reception.
Ms. Barr’s artistry has been featured regionally, nationally and internationally. She was the sole representative of the United States in the Ikon Gallery Touring exhibit through Great Britain, “Seeing Color in Black and White: Oxford Streets.” Two of her photographs appeared on the exhibit’s promotional posters and one on the cover of the exhibit’s catalog.
Last spring her work appeared at the Adkins Arboretum Visitors Center in Caroline County. The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities Public Art Bank purchased some of her nature images from that exhibit that now appear in buildings throughout the city. Photographs of hers also are part of the permanent public art collection of the John A. Wilson Building which houses the offices and chambers of the D.C. Mayor and Council.
Ms. Barr is the recipient of a 2003 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award Grant for artistic excellence in photography. She studied film, painting, printmaking and papermaking at the University of Maryland and frequently combines these media to create photo-based works. Recently, she was nominated for the Baker Artist Award and examples of her work appear at www.bakerartistawards.org and at www.deneebarrartnews.blogspot.com.
