Columbia, MD - June 10, 2009 - To honor Maggie Brown’s decades of service to the Columbia and Howard County community, the Columbia Association (CA) has established the Maggie Brown Endowment Fund at The Columbia Foundation. The donor-advised fund w ill help Columbia families participate in programs for children and youth by providing support to Columbia nonprofit organizations offering activities and services for young people. As Ms. Brown said upon learning of the fund, “Youth are our replacement and we should be busy cultivating them. Having this fund at The Columbia Foundation will help me to do that.”
A 38-year resident of Columbia, Ms. Brown first became involved with the CA in 1982 as Sales Manager for the Membership Services Center. Following a five-year tenure as Assistant to the Chief Administrative Officer for Howard County Government, she returned to CA in 1993. As Vice President and Director of Community Services, Ms. Brown not only coordinated support and assistance to the ten village community associations but also oversaw various programs for children and adults, including summer camps, before and after school care, the Teen Center and the Lakefront Festival. She was appointed CA President in 2001, a position she held until early this year.
Ms. Brown’s community activities have included serving as a Trustee for the Columbia Foundation, a member of the Board of Directors of the Howard County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Howard County General Hospital Board of Trustees, member of Horizon Executive Advisory Board, member of Vision Howard County, member of the Center for Community Health Strategies Board and president of the Columbia Birthday Celebration. She is a founding member of the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County, a donor-advised fund at The Columbia Foundation with the mission is to enhance the quality of life for women in Howard County, and served as a member of the Grassroots Renovation and Expansion Committee. Currently, she is on the Leadership Howard County Board of Directors.
In 2008, the Howard County Chamber of Commerce awarded her their 2008 Exemplar Award. Her many other community awards include the 2007 Eastern Province Council Community Achievement Award of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc., the 2005 Wylene Sims Burch Award of the Howard County Center of African-American Culture, Inc., the 2004 Individual Commitment Star Award of the Howard County Economic Development Authority’s Committee for Business and Economic Diversity (CBED), the 2003 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Meritorious Service Award, the March 2002 Women’s History Month Tribute for outstanding community service and the Business Associate of the Year 2001 by the American Business Women’s Association.
Ms. Brown was inducted into Howard County’s Women’s Hall of Fame in 1999, was selected as one of the “Ten Outstanding Howa rd County Business Women” for 1986 and was honored with Columbia Magazine’s “25 Who Made A Difference” award.
Founded in 1969, the Foundation has awarded over $10 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs. Money for the grant programs comes primarily from income generated by the Foundation’s endowment supported by over 240 funds established by Howard County businesses, families and individuals.
