The Columbia Foundation Grants $85,000 to Howard County Nonprofit Organizations
Columbia, MD - June 3, 2009 - The Columbia Foundation, Howard County's community foundation, announces the granting of $85,000 in project grants to 20 local charitable organizations.
HUMAN SERVICE GRANTS
The eight human service grants total $60,000 and will help support groups addressing some of the more critical concerns of the community.
Best Buddies Maryland - $8,000 to support the Howard County Middle and High School Project which pairs students who have intellectual disabilities with non-disabled students for one-on-one relationships.
Camp Attaway - $8,000 towards the Counselor-in-Training program of this summer camp for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities.
Community Action Council of Howard County - $10,000 for equipment needed to enhance the “customer choice approach” at their Food Bank Pantry service.
Girl Scouts of Central Maryland - $7,500 to support their “Project Anti-Violence Education” program.
Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center - $10,000 towards their “Route One Day Resource Center,” a drop-in location for those who are chronically homeless.
Salvation Army Howard County Service Center - $8,500 to send economically-disadvantaged Howard County children to a residential summer camp.
TAI Sophia Institute - $5,000 in support of their “Wellness Skills Training for Health Care Providers” program to enhance the care-giving and self-care skills of direct service workers.
The Serenity Center - $3,000 for their “Wellness Initiative” program to provide acupuncture treatments and/or holistic therapy to their clients involved in 12-Step Recovery programs.
ARTS AND CULTURAL GRANTS
Six arts and cultural organizations were awarded a total of $12,000.
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company - $2,500 for their “Free Shakespeare for Kids” program which allows children under the age of 18 to attend a summer production at no charge.
Howard County Ballet - $3,000 towards their “Sleeping Beauty Excerpts” and “Little Red Riding Hood” performances.
Little Patuxent Review - $2,000 to support the production of the sixth issue of this local arts publication.
Orchestra of St. John’s - $1,000 towards the costs of a concert featuring 21 local, professional musicians performing music by Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Barber.
The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University - $2,500 in scholarship funds for Howard County students to participate in the Peabody Children’s Chorus of Peabody Preparatory.
Showtime Singers - $1,000 in funding for two major, full-length, free concerts designed for Howard County senior citizens, and open to the area public.
EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICES GRANTS
Six grants in this category totaled $13,000.
Courtesy on the Road - $2,000 to support the continuation of their incentive-based training to encourage safe driving by teen-aged drivers.
Friends of the Howard County Library - $2,000 towards their “Project Literacy” summer program for adult learners.
Howard County Antique Farm Machinery Club - $2,300 for their Fire Suppression System in the James Clark Main Display and Educational Building.
Howard County Center of African American Culture - $3,300 towards the re-opening of the center’s research library and archive.
The Howard County Local Brain Bee - $1,000 to support the Brain Bee Neuroscience Competition for High School students in Howard County to encourage the pursuit of careers in biomedical research.
Junior Achievement of Central Maryland - $2,400 in matching funds to sponsor a Title One Elementary School fifth grade class in Howard County to receive the JA BizTown Program.
Founded in 1969, the Foundation has awarded over $10 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs. Money for the grant programs comes primarily from income generated by the Foundation’s endowment supported by over 240 funds established by Howard County businesses, families and individuals.
