The Columbia Foundation Grants $230,002 to Howard County Nonprofit Organizations
Columbia, MD - November 26, 2008 - The Columbia Foundation, Howard County’s community foundation, announces the granting of $230,002 to 32 local nonprofit organizations.

HUMAN SERVICE GRANTS

The 18 human service grants total $136,000 and will help support groups addressing some of the more critical concerns of the community, including family issues, health care and housing.

Adaptive Living, Inc. - $1,700 to help maintain a supervised residential program for the developmentally disabled.

Christ Church Link - $5,000 to support this social services telephone referral network.

Congregations Concerned for the Homeless -$10,000 to support their tr ansitional and permanent housing program for the homeless in Howard County.

Domestic Violence Center of Howard County, Inc. - $20,000 in support of programs for abused individuals and their families.

FISH of Howard County - $10,000 in emergency funding for food, rent, fuel, or medical assistance to individuals and families in need.

Foreign-born Information and Referral Network (FIRN) - $10,000 to provide a wide range of support services to the county’s growing immigrant population.

HC DrugFre e - $8,000 to support the organization’s efforts to help parents raise drug-free teens, including their substance abuse prevention, early intervention, drug evaluation and counseling programs.

Howard County Autism Society - $6,000 to improve the capabilities of their web site that is a resource for individuals who have autism and their families.

Humanim - $10,000 in matching funds towards their purchase of a wheelchair van.

Linwood Center - $5,000 in matching funds for staff development related to working with those who have autism.

NAMI Howard County - $5,500 to expand their outreach and offer education and support to individuals and families living with mental illness.

National Family Resilience Center - $7,000 to support their sliding fee scale towards services to families experiencing separation and divorce.

NeighborRide - $8,500 to support their operations in providing transportation for the older residents and those with disabilities.

Special Olympics Howard County - $5,500 in matching funds for year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults in Howard County with intellectual or closely related disabilities.

The STTAR Center - $6,000 for programs to support and assist those affected by physical and mental trauma.

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults - $9,800 in matching funds for support and outreach programs for young adults coping with cancer.

Voices for Children - $3,000 towards their programs advocating for abused and neglected children who mus t navigate the court system.

Winter Growth Ruth Keeton Center Complex - $5,000 to support their day programs for older adults in the community.

ARTS AND CULTURAL GRANTS

Nine arts and cultural organizations were awarded a total of $79,000.

Candlelight Concert Society, Inc. – $10,000 in matching funds to continue presentations of exceptional chamber music in Howard County.

Columbia Center for the Theatrical Arts - $7,500 to continue their theatrical training and other programs for young people.

The Columbia Festival of the Arts - $15,000 to support this annual celebration of the arts in Columbia.

Columbia Orchestra - $14,000 to support their concert performance schedule.

Columbia Pro Cantare Chorus – $12,000 to continue their outstanding choral concerts.

Howard County Arts Council – $6,000 to foster community visual and performing artists and arts groups by providing studio space, galleries, classes and performances.

Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo) – $5,000 for their live programs of poetry and literature by well-renowned poets and authors.

Kinetics Dance Theater -- $7,500 to support the operations of this local dance school.

Sundays at Three - $2,000 to support local chamber music artists and performances.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICES GRAN TS

The five grants in this category totaled $15,002.

B&O Railroad Museum, Ellicott City - $2,834 to expand their education programs and resources.

Conexiones - $5,334 to support this organization dedicated to Hispanic student achievement.

Friends of the Patapsco Greenway - $2,834 to expand their “Stream Watch” program into Howard County.

Helping Hands Enrichment & Leadership Foundation - $2,000 to help promote the academic success of20elementary school children through year -round academic and enrichment programs.

Howard County Foundation for Black Education and Cultural Achievement - $2,000 to provide college scholarship support for Howard County students.


Founded in 1969, the Foundation has awarded $10 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs. Money for the grant programs comes primarily from income generated by the Foundation’s endowment supported by over 230 funds established by Howard County businesses, families and individuals.
