Columbia, MD - June 5, 2008 -
In partnership with The Columbia Foundation, the family of the late Ann Scherr, former Director of Community Services at the Columbia Association, established the Ann Scherr Fund to provide scholarships for summer pool memberships. These grants help lower income families pay the already-reduced rate that the Columbia Association offers. Interested families should call the Columbia Association’s Member Services Center at 410-730-1801 to request an application.
Ann Scherr suffered two strokes in 1997, and lived eight more years as an active citizen until she passed away in October 2005. She had both a professional and personal concern in ensuring that Columbia’s facilities and services, such as after-school care, summer camps and swimming pool memberships, were available and accessible to all residents. Many of Ms. Scherr's family members and friends donate to this fund and hope to see it continue for many years to come.
Founded in 1969, the Foundation has awarded over $9 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs. Money for the grant programs comes primarily from income generated by the Foundation’s endowment supported by over 235 funds established by Howard County businesses, families and individuals.
