Columbia, Maryland - June 28, 2007 -
The Columbia Foundation, Howard County’s community foundation, is awarding $140,000 in project grants to 26 local charitable organizations.
HUMAN SERVICE GRANTS
The 13 human service grants total $78,100 and will help support groups addressing some of the more critical concerns of the community.
ARC of Howard - $2,600 to expand and support their “Relationship Groups” program in which young people with developmental disabilities discuss and resolve issues and challenges.
Chase Brexton - $5,000 to support the establishment of their multi-disciplinary health center.
Community Action Council of Howard County - $3,000 to expand their Head Start Summer Enrichment Program.
Congregations Concerned for the Homeless - $11,500 to support a mentoring program for their clients.
Ellicott Terrace/Columbia Housing - $12,500 to support revitalization of a 40-year old Ellicott City apartment property housing low- and moderate-income residents.
Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center - $15,000 to support their ongoing renovation and expansion project at their Freetown Road location.
Humanim - $5,000 towards their verbal language skills training program for children with autism.
Loyola College - $4,000 to support creation of a training DVD to help parents of children with Down Syndrome foster speech and language development.
Neighbor Ride, Inc. - $5,000 to help fund their volunteer management efforts.
Salvation Army Howard County Service Center - $5,000 to send Howard County at-risk children to a residential summer camp.
Special Olympics Howard County - $2,500 to build two bocce ball courts in Cedar Lane Park.
Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults - $5,000 to underwrite expenses for their 10th anniversary celebration and fund raiser.
Winter Growth - $2,000 towards improving the exercise component of their Wellness Program by hiring a fitness consultant and upgrading their equipment.
ARTS AND CULTURAL GRANTS
Two arts and cultural organizations were awarded a total of $4,500.
Howard County Ballet - $1,500 in support of their performance of The Wizard of Oz.
Little Patuxent Review - $3,000 for costs of printing Columbia at 40, the second issue of this county literary and visual arts magazine.
EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICES GRANTS
Eleven grants in this category totaled $57,400.
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum – Ellicott City Station – $2,500 to expand their Holiday Festival of Trains exhibit.
Courtesy on the Road - $3,000 to support the continuation of their incentive-based training to encourage safe driving by teen-aged drivers.
Green Building Institute - $3,000 to fund their “Go Green, Save Green” program, an environmental education program for low-moderate income Howard County residents.
HC Drug Free - $4,000 to create and Educational Materials Resource Bank.
Howard County Antique Farm Machinery Club - $5,000 to assist with the relocation and construction of a bank barn at the Museum.
Individual Difference in Learning Association - $3,500 to continue their professional development program to help Howard County Public School teachers working with students that have both high cognitive ability and learning disabilities.
Korean American Community Association of Howard County - $5,000 towards the implementation of seminars for Korean families about drug and alcohol use.
Oakland Mills Community Association - $11,900 for communication activities and efforts related to the Oakland Mills Community Initiative.
Reservoir High School - $7,500 to help support a three-day CommUNITY building retreat for ninth through twelfth grade students.
University of Maryland, Howard County Legacy Leadership Program - $10,000 towards a Legacy Leadership Institute in Howard County to be housed at the Howard County Library.
Vision Howard County - $2,000 in support of their Spring Issues Forum which will focus on diversity, civility and inclusiveness.
Founded in 1969, the Foundation has awarded over $9 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs. Money for the grant programs comes primarily from income generated by the Foundation’s endowment supported by over 200 funds established by Howard County businesses, families and individuals.
