Steven and Beverly Koren are founding participants in the Howard Legacy Society which recognizes donors who have made bequests to the Foundation.

Ways to Give

Just as there are many types of funds, there are many ways to give. Consult your financial advisor or ask us which way will be most beneficial for you. Since The Columbia Foundation is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a public charity, your gift will provide the maximum tax benefits allowed by law.

Appreciated Property

You receive very beneficial tax treatment through contributions of long-term capital gains on securities or real estate.

Bequests: Howard Legacy Society

All of us leave a legacy - the values we teach our children, the memories we create with friends. But with planning, you can reach beyond your circle of family members and friends to create a legacy that touches the entire community and improves the lives of the people who live here for many years to come.

By including a bequest to The Columbia Foundation in your will, you'll be helping to ensure that the institutions that are the very fabric of community life will contine to thrive and grow into the future.

Below are those who have decided to make "legacy" gifts and join the Howard Legacy Society.

Cash

A gift of cash is immediate, straightforward and simple. And you can take a full tax deduction in the year you contribute.

Whatever way you choose to make a gift to The Columbia Foundation, you’ll be creating a legacy and benefiting your neighbors in Howard County for many years to come.

Charitable Trusts

You can establish an irrevocable trust that provides interest income to your beneficiaries and the remainder to The Columbia Foundation. Or, you can do the reverse and establish a trust that provides income to the Foundation for a period of years, after which your beneficiaries receive the principal.

Life Insurance

By taking out a policy and designating The Columbia Foundation as owner, you receive a tax deduction for the annual premiums, and the Foundation receives the policy benefits upon your death. Another option is to contribute a paid-up policy and receive a deduction for the cash value.

Private/Family Foundations

A private or family foundation may set up a donor-advised fund at The Columbia Foundation. The Community Foundation’s status as a public charity means that grants made to it by the private foundation constitute qualifying distributions which fulfill the private foundation’s expenditure responsibility. The trustees of the private foundation can maintain the same name, identity and charitable goals without the burdensome administrative costs of private foundation management. This option could save thousands of dollars and allow you to spend less on administration and more supporting the causes you are most passionate about.

Volunteerism

While our community nonprofits depend on our help to fund their existing services and offer new ones, many also appreciate the gift of time. Opportunities to give back to the community through volunteerism abound in Howard County. Here are a few places to start.
